How US Time Zones Work

Each time zone is roughly 15 degrees of longitude wide, though state borders often determine the exact boundaries. When it's noon in New York (Eastern), it's:

  • 11:00 AM in Chicago (Central)
  • 10:00 AM in Denver (Mountain)
  • 9:00 AM in Los Angeles (Pacific)
  • 8:00 AM in Anchorage (Alaska)
  • 7:00 AM in Honolulu (Hawaii)

Daylight Saving Time in the US

Most of the US observes Daylight Saving Time (DST), moving clocks forward 1 hour in spring and back in fall. Exceptions include:

  • Arizona - Does not observe DST (except Navajo Nation)
  • Hawaii - Does not observe DST
  • US territories - Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, etc.
