Year-round IST

India uses a single time zone across the entire country - Indian Standard Time (IST). With a unique UTC+5:30 offset, India is one of the few countries using a half-hour time zone.

Why Does India Use UTC+5:30?

India's time zone is set to the meridian passing through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh (82.5°E longitude). The half-hour offset was chosen as a compromise between the eastern and western extremes of the country.

Despite spanning roughly 30 degrees of longitude (68°E to 97°E), India chose to use a single time zone for national unity and administrative simplicity.

Best Time to Call India from the US

If you're in the US and need to call someone in India during business hours (9 AM - 6 PM IST):

  • From East Coast (EST): Call between 10:30 PM - 7:30 AM EST (previous night to early morning)
  • From West Coast (PST): Call between 7:30 PM - 4:30 AM PST (evening to very early morning)

The overlap is challenging, which is why many US-India business calls happen early morning US time or late evening India time.
