What is GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)?
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. It has historically been used as an international time standard, with time zones around the world expressed as offsets from GMT (e.g., GMT+5, GMT-8).
GMT History
GMT was established in 1675 when the Royal Observatory was built. It became the world's time standard in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference. The Prime Meridian (0° longitude) passes through Greenwich.
Countries Using GMT
- United Kingdom: Uses GMT in winter, BST (GMT+1) in summer
- Iceland: Uses GMT year-round
- Portugal: Uses GMT/WET in winter
- Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal: Use GMT year-round
GMT vs UTC
While GMT and UTC are often used interchangeably, UTC is technically more precise as it's based on atomic time. For everyday purposes, GMT and UTC can be considered equivalent (both are +0 offset).
